Karakul Lake


The Karakul or Karakuli (Chinese:"卡拉库里湖",Uyghur: قاراكۆل‎, ULY: Qaraköl, Қаракөл, lit. "black lake") is a lake located 196 km southwest of Kashgar,Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China. It is located in Akto County, Kizilsu Kirgiz Autonomous Prefecture on the Karakoram Highway, before reaching Tashkurgan, the Khunjerab Pass on the China - Pakistan border and Sost in Pakistan.

At an altitude of 3,600 m, it is the highest lake of the Pamir plateau, near the junction of the Pamir, Tian Shan and Kunlun mountain ranges. Surrounded by mountains which remain snow-covered throughout the year, the three highest peaks visible from the lake are the Muztagh Ata (7,546 m), Kongur Tagh (7,649 m) and Kongur Tiube (7,530 m). The lake is popular among travellers for its scenery and the clarity of its reflection in the water, whose color ranges from a dark green to azure and light blue. There are two Kirgiz settlements along the shore of Karakul lake, a small number of yurts about 1 km east of the bus drop-off point and a village with stone houses located on the western shores.

Karakul means "black lake" and it is indeed looks black when the sun is hidden by clouds. It's the highest lake in the world excluding those in Tibet and even Titicaca Lake - the biggest alpine lake in the world is located on lower altitudes. The lake has 2 basins separated by a peninsula from the south and an island in the north. Surrounded by mountains which remain snow-covered throughout the year, the three highest peaks visible from the lake are the Muztagh Ata (7,546m), Kongur Tagh (7,649m) and Kongur Tiube (7,530m).

    Not sure why people like this place so much. It is a small and dirty pond surrounded by dry and dusty land. Hours of road just to take a picture and drive back: makes no sense to me. There are way nicer mountain lakes in...More

    The warning was it is a long day and so it proved. Basically nearly 5 hours to get there with stops. Security checks now 1 major one. No special permits needed for foreigners but you need passport. The lakes are spectacular as was the scenery...More

    Beautiful place in Karakoram Road! We stopped by for lunch in a yurt - very local food. The lake view is simply amazing. We hanged around for a while taking photos and enjoying the amazing scenery
